OCEAN DREAMING

Ocean Dreaming is a fine art photographic series by Tony Palmer, exploring memory, absence, and the sensory experience of being in the ocean. Shot on Sydney's Northern Beaches after 27 years in the water, as a surfer before a photographer.

After months away from the water, the ocean became something that I would visit in sleep, not as place, but as feeling. The particular lift of a swell. The fractured light on the surface at dawn. The way a breaking wave turns your body before you've had time to think.

These images are the visual residue of that dreaming. A collection of fine art ocean prints, made not of the ocean as it is, but as the body remembers it.

My practice has been shaped by years of reading waves from in the water, and with a camera in a housing, learning to see the ocean at the precise moment it refuses to be seen clearly.

Ocean Dreaming takes that in-water perspective and pushes it further, past action, past the decisive moment, and into the blurred threshold where waking and sleep meet. These are not surf action photographs. They are fine art ocean prints for people who understand what the water actually feels like.

For anyone who has ever loved a stretch of coastline so deeply it follows them to sleep, these images will feel like recognition.
